Spread is a simple definition of the width and height of a beam pattern, in degrees.

We usually say this in width by height. For example, 80x10 is 80 degrees wide, and 10 degrees tall.

  • Can be used to define a beam pattern (80x10) or actually name the product (30-degree Spot, etc)
  • Difficult to define because light always trails off to the sides. Where do we “cut off” our measurement? At the brightest area? Is it 10x10 or 12x12?
  • In the optical world, a mathematical “cutoff” definition is used called FWHM, or full-width at half-maximum, to describe beam spread.

We use this term to describe output to customers, and as general guidance for engineering.
